My name is Seth, I’m currently a 2L at NYLS. Before entering law school, I graduated magna cum laude with a degree in political science and commercial music from Lipscomb University in Nashville, TN. I also worked for a year at an information technology company known as Output Services Group. My goal is to become an entertainment lawyer.
Q&A
What brought you to law school?
My decision to enter law school was inspired by my decade-long journey of being a songwriter. I wanted to study the law and obtain the legal skills to advocate for artists’ rights, especially in a time when business and AI technology seem to have begun drowning out art in terms of importance.
What interested you in the Digital Scholars program?
I was interested in the Digital Scholars program because of the opportunity to immerse myself in learning about broadband and telecommunications. I was interested in the opportunity to hone my research and writing skills, as well as the chance to network with players within the broadband industry. I also just wanted to keep an open mind and explore other types of legal areas besides entertainment law.
What have you learned so far about broadband? And what do you want to learn about next?
What I have learned about broadband so far is how essential access to broadband is in a globalized world where economic development and connections are fueled by it. I have learned that unfortunately there are still many underserved communities out there who need more access to broadband and the importance of programs created to provide that access to those communities.
What kind of law would you like to practice after you graduate?
After graduating from law school, I see myself working as an intellectual property litigator, specializing in either the music or tech industry. Both fields are rapidly evolving, presenting complex legal challenges that require a deep understanding of copyright and trademarks. I am passionate about protecting creative and technological innovations, whether by advocating for artists’ rights in the music industry or defending groundbreaking advancements in tech. Through litigation, I aim to help clients navigate disputes, enforce their rights, and shape the future of IP law in these dynamic industries.
